I was a happy, content child. Of course, I had my moments of HOT temper - not tantrums, just straight up silent treatment towards my parents or my brother.
My aunts and uncles would reminisce, "Even as a baby, she would just wake up smiling and giggling."
Then one day, my parents took me to a photography studio. I must have been 9 - 10 years old.
I was all dressed up, excited to take the photos.
The photographer set me up in front of those bright lights, and asked me to smile.
So I did! With all my heart. Showing ALL my teeth.
The photographer's instant response was, "Don't laugh. Just smile."
So I smiled the only other way I knew how - with my lips closed. Showing zero teeth at this time.
What came after, was stuck in my subconscious mind for TWENTY FIVE years!
The photographer said, "It's OK. Don't smile."
In that brief interaction, I picked up a wound. "My smile must not be beautiful enough to be photographed.
The nature of the wounding is such that unless we heal it, it ruminates. Our psyche, our brain starts weaving stories around it. Those stories, build up on each other. Sometimes, when this build up goes on for years and decades, all we see is our behavior that comes as a result of those stories deep under which the wound is still craving to be healed.
My story of "My smile isn't worthy of being photographed" turned into "My smile isn't beautiful".
The build up continued to spiral.
- "I am not beautiful."
- "I am not worthy of being photographed."
- "Who wants to see me on videos when all these beautiful women influencers are out there?" (I didn't see many, if any, portrayals in the media of women who look like me referred to as "beautiful" but that's a whole other systemic issue of racism, colorism, and fatphobia. Story for another time.)
These thoughts were such a regular part of me, that I didn't even think they were wrong. I just accepted those to be facts. (That's the power of unhealed wounds.)
What started as that happy child suddenly feeling awkward when taking photos, turned into a pattern of "hiding" myself - not because I had anything to hide but because I didn't feel worthy of being seen.
25 years later, that wound had turned into a subconscious fear or block that was holding me back from being the teacher, speaker and healer I am born to be.
It was holding me back from:
- Sharing photos of me on the website or social media
- Getting on the video to spread my message
- Wearing the bold, colorful clothes that I now wear to express my bold, colorful inside
- Coming out of the spiritual closet, and create the products that I am now known for
- Confidently show up on sales calls, and invite the right people to join my offerings
In short, this fear of being seen was keeping me from expanding in my business, being liberated in my expression, and being joyful in my life.
If you are experiencing any of these or similar symptoms, know that you aren't doomed. There is a sustainable way is to heal this subconscious fear of being seen.
But you gotta heal it in order to show up as your vibrant, radiant self. It's not going to happen on it's own without your intention.
And it must be done in a sustainable way. You cannot push your way out of it. You may even courageously show up in photos, videos, sales calls here and there but you still won't make it your new normal.
Your expression is too valuable to remain hidden.
YOU are worthy of being seen, just the way you are right here, right now!
